Magadh University (MU), Gaya Overview Overview

Founded by Satyendra Narayan Sinha (then Education Minister of Bihar), the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and University Grants Commission (UGC) approved Magadh University is a public university situated in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India.

With 44 constituent and 175 affiliated colleges, Magadh University is currently the largest university of Bihar. Magadh University is accredited by NAAC with a score of 1.76 valid till the 13th of September 2020. Ranking of Magadh University in India is 115.

The university offers a total of 290 courses in branches of Accounting & Commerce, Arts ( Fine / Visual / Performing ), Banking, Finance & Insurance, Business & Management Studies, Engineering, Hospitality & Travel, Humanities & Social Sciences, IT & Software, Law, Mass Communication & Media, Medicine & Health Sciences, Science, Teaching & Education etc.

Undergraduate courses

Magadh University offers a variety of courses in several disciplines. The Undergraduate courses include B.A, B.A. LL.B, B.Com, B.E / B.Tech, B.Ed, B.J.M.C, B.Lib.I.Sc, B.Lib.Sc, B.Sc, B.Voc, BBA and BCA.

The Bachelor of Arts (Honors) full-time course provides degrees in English, Sociology, Psychology, Journalism, Hindi Journalism, History, Political Science, Philosophy, Mathematics, Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Music, Persian, Travel & Tourism, Economics, Communicative English and Media Studies, Advertising, Sales Promotion and Sales Management etc over a period of three years.

The three-year-long Bachelor of Science (Honors) programme provides degrees in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Zoology, Botany, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Statistics, Computer Application, Clinical Nutrition, Environmental Science, Electronics, Biochemistry, Home Science, Industrial Microbiology etc.

Postgraduate courses

The Postgraduate courses offered by the university include Executive MBA/PGDM, LL.B, M.A, M.Com, M.Ed, M.Lib.I.Sc, M.Lib.Sc, M.Sc, MBA/PGDM and MCA. The Master of Business Administration degree provides specializations in Human Resource Management, Finance, Marketing, Information Technology, International Business etc.

The 2 year-long Master of Science programme provides degrees in Chemistry, Information Technology, Mathematics, Computer Science, Botany, Environmental Science, Biochemistry, Electronics, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Zoology, Physics etc.

The Master of Arts programme provides specializations in Economics, History, Psychology, Geography, Sanskrit, English, Political Science, Buddhist Studies, Hindi, Philosophy, Sociology, Mathematics, Music, Persian, Urdu, Women Studies etc. The duration of the PG courses under Magadh University is generally two years.

PhD courses

Magadh University Bodh Gaya offers a three-year-long PhD programme on specializations like Psychology, Computer Science, Commerce, Buddhist Studies, Zoology, Botany, Development Communication & Extension, Food and Nutrition, Geography, Home Science, Human Development & Childhood Studies, Microbiology, Persian, Political Science, Sanskrit, Sociology etc.

Admission Process

All the applicants are admitted to the courses at the university based on the marks scored in their qualifying degree, entrance examination or admission tests. Candidates need to score above a specified mark in these exams to get admitted to a particular course or discipline.

Candidates also need to have minimum eligibility to be able to apply for the admission process, for example passing 10+2 from a recognised university for undergraduate courses and a UG degree in a relevant field with a minimum aggregate of 50% for postgraduate courses.

Results and Cut-off

Magadh University declares the cut-off list for its several courses and degrees once the results of their respective entrance examinations are calculated. The candidates need to obtain a score which is equal to or more than the cut-off mark specified by the university to get admitted to their desired courses. The cut-offs are relaxed for reserved candidates like SCs, STs and OBCs.

Alumni Network

Magadh University has an Alumni Association that takes responsibility for institutional proceedings related to the alumni members of the institute. The name of the alumni association of Magadh University is Samvitti. The association came into existence in the year 2015.

The association is registered under the provision of the Indian Trusts Act. Dr. Vishnu, an eminent faculty from the Department of Buddhist Studies is the person behind the establishment of the association. The association encourages the student-alumni contact through various efforts.

It also organizes reunions and cultural events throughout the year where alumni share their academic journey to the present students of the university.

Scholarships 

The scholarship and assistantship programmes offered by Magadh University to its students include the following:

• Although the University has not been providing Scholarships or Freeships to its students since the past four years it does help them in availing student loans and also provides the necessary support regarding documentation and certification when applying for educational loans.
• All SC, ST, OBC and minority students are offered financial aid of various forms from the State and Central government. These programmes cover around 70 to 75 percent of the total number of students enrolled in the institution.

Campus Facilities 

The library at Magadh University keeps a rich collection of about 1,55,000 books, 3,000 theses, 1,500 rare manuscripts on a broad range of disciplines, 2,000 back volumes, dissertations and rare books. The university provides hostel or lodging provisions for both boys and girls. It has a total of eight hostels, six for boys and two for girls.

The boys’ hostels altogether have 386 beds while the girls’ hostels have 175. All the rooms in the hostels are equipped with basic facilities such as security, power backup, common room, internet connectivity, kitchen and mess with dining space, parking etc.

The university has a Badminton Court, Basketball Court, Cricket Ground, Football Ground, Volleyball Court and additional facilities for Table Tennis, Hockey, Athletics, Kabaddi and Kho-kho.
